 single most common reason a standby generator does nothing when the lights go out.

## Why standby duty is so hard on a battery

A car battery lives an easy life by comparison. It gets discharged a little and recharged a

## The weekly exercise does not prove what people think

It proves the starting circuit works and the engine runs. It does not prove the battery has
 capacity left, because starting draws heavily for a few seconds and the

 of its original capacity will still start a warm engine on a mild day, every week, right up
 until it cannot.

What settles the question is a load test — putting a real draw on the battery and watching

## What you can check yourself

- Terminals. Corrosion at the posts adds resistance exactly where you cannot afford it. It is visible, and it cleans off.

- Age. If you do not know how old it is, that is itself the answer. Treat it as a wear part.
