The light is blinking a number at you

A Cummins home standby generator reports every fault as a blink pattern on a small light inside the enclosure. It is not a warning light. It is a number, and the number is specific.

Read the code before you touch anything

The status indicator light sits on the control switch inside the generator. After a fault shutdown it blinks in repeating sets, and the first thing to count is how many.

First-level faults — the count says it directly

  • 1 blink: Shutdown on high engine temperature.
  • 2 blinks: Shutdown on loss of engine oil pressure.
  • 3 blinks: A service fault. Press Stop once and the controller blinks the two-digit code.
  • 4 blinks: Cranking time exceeded 35 seconds.

The two-digit code blinks as tens, a brief pause, then units. Code 36 is three blinks, pause, six blinks, long pause, repeat. Two details save a lot of confusion here. The code stops blinking after five minutes. Press Stop three times within three seconds to restore it. And the last fault logged keeps blinking even after the condition that caused it has been fixed.

Codes 33 and 44 were deliberately never assigned, so that a first-level 3 or 4 can never be mistaken for a two-digit code. It is a small piece of design, and it is the reason to count the pauses as carefully as the blinks.

Fault history is kept on the in-home operator panel, which is easier to read than a light in a side yard at night — and if the unit has remote monitoring fitted, the fault reaches us without anyone counting anything.

Codes with something to check first

These have a cause an owner can see and, in a few cases, correct. None of them requires opening anything electrical.

2 Low oil pressure

What triggers it: The oil pressure switch held the control circuit at ground for three seconds or longer.

Documented causes: Oil level low or overfilled, a faulty oil pressure relief valve, a faulty oil pump, or an unintended ground in the harness.

What you can do: Check the oil level on a cold engine. It is the one item on this list a homeowner can both diagnose and correct, and an overfill triggers it as readily as a low level.

29 High battery voltage

What triggers it: More than 19 VDC reaching the controller.

Documented causes: The wrong battery configuration, damaged wiring, a faulty charger, or the control.

What you can do: If anyone has been at the battery recently, that is where to look first. A 24-volt battery fitted to a 12-volt system produces this immediately.

32 Low cranking speed

What triggers it: Engine speed under 180 RPM for three continuous seconds after the start command.

Documented causes: Battery, battery connections, starter, engine, air intake, exhaust, alternator windings, wiring, oil viscosity, or iced or corroded slip rings.

What you can do: This is the battery code in practice. Corroded or loose terminals produce it, and both are visible and free to fix.

46 Generator set overload

What triggers it: Total load above 105% of the set's rating.

Documented causes: Too much connected load.

What you can do: This one is genuinely informative. It means the machine is smaller than the house is asking for, or that load management is not doing its job.

76 Alternator over temperature

What triggers it: The alternator temperature switch opened, which happens between 197 and 209 degrees Fahrenheit.

Documented causes: Wiring, a faulty temperature switch, a faulty set or fan drive, or inadequate cooling airflow.

What you can do: Cooling airflow is the one to check. In a DFW August this is the fault that arrives because something is blocking the enclosure.

78 Low fuel pressure

What triggers it: The fuel pressure switch reported low pressure.

Documented causes: Wiring, the fuel system, or the pressure switch.

What you can do: Open any closed fuel valve. That is the manufacturer's own first instruction, and on propane it is worth checking the tank as well.

79 Failed to transfer to the generator

What triggers it: The transfer to generator power did not complete.

Documented causes: Wiring, a faulty positional switch, or a transfer switch component.

What you can do: Verify the main AC circuit breaker on the generator is switched on. The manufacturer lists that first because it is frequently the answer.

Codes that mean stop and call

Every one of these is an engine, alternator or governor fault. The machine shut down on purpose, and the useful thing you can do is write down the number.

4 Overcrank

What triggers it: Three crank attempts of 30 seconds each, 15 seconds apart, without the control sensing that the alternator had come up to frequency.

Documented causes: The set did not start: fuel supply, air-fuel mixture, wiring, starter, ignition, or the excitation circuit.

What you can do: Confirm the gas valve is open, then stop. Repeated cranking on a unit that will not start is how a good starter and a good battery are destroyed on the same night.

12 Overvoltage

What triggers it: Above 300 VAC instantly, or between 268 and 300 VAC line-to-line for three continuous seconds.

Documented causes: Connected loads, wiring connections, or the alternator windings.

What you can do: Nothing. The machine shut itself down to protect what is plugged into it, and that was the right call.

13 Undervoltage

What triggers it: Below 216 VAC line-to-line for five continuous seconds.

Documented causes: Connected loads, wiring, alternator windings, or simple overload.

What you can do: Note what was running when it happened. If it tripped as a large motor started, that is a sizing conversation rather than a fault.

14 Overfrequency

What triggers it: Above 72 Hz instantly, or between 66 and 72 Hz for six continuous seconds.

Documented causes: Governor function, fuel supply, air-fuel mixture, exhaust, the demand regulator, throttle plate, alternator windings or wiring.

What you can do: Nothing. Frequency faults are engine-speed faults and belong to a technician.

15 Underfrequency

What triggers it: Below 54 Hz on a 60 Hz set for eight continuous seconds.

Documented causes: The same list as overfrequency, plus ignition.

What you can do: Underfrequency under heavy load often means the engine is being asked for more than it has. Worth mentioning what was running.

19 Governor actuator shutdown

What triggers it: The control sensed the governor actuator circuit open or shorted.

Documented causes: Wiring connections or the actuator itself.

What you can do: Nothing.

22 Governor actuator overload

What triggers it: Maximum governor output held for ten continuous seconds.

Documented causes: Loads, wiring, fuel supply, mixture, exhaust, the actuator, ignition, high ambient temperature, or blocked cooling airflow.

What you can do: Two items on that list are yours: blocked cooling airflow and high ambient temperature. Clear anything stacked against the enclosure.

27 Voltage sense lost

What triggers it: The set is turning above 40 Hz but the control sees under 5 VAC on one or both lines.

Documented causes: Loads, alternator windings, or wiring.

What you can do: Nothing.

36 Stopped without a fault condition

What triggers it: Speed under 500 RPM and sense voltage at zero, with no other fault recorded.

Documented causes: Fuel supply, mixture, exhaust, the demand regulator, throttle plate, alternator windings, ignition, or wiring.

What you can do: Check that the gas supply is on and that nothing has changed at the meter. A set that stops cleanly with no fault has usually lost fuel.

45 Speed sense fault

What triggers it: While running, the quadrature frequency dropped to zero for one continuous second.

Documented causes: Loads, alternator windings, wiring, or open or corroded slip rings.

What you can do: Nothing.

Codes about the controller itself

Three codes point at the control board rather than the machine around it. The manufacturer's remedy for two of them is to replace the control.

35 Control card failure

What triggers it: An EEPROM error during the controller self-test.

Documented causes: Faulty program.

What you can do: Nothing. The manual's entire remedy is to replace the control.

37 Invalid set configuration

What triggers it: The control configuration does not match any valid configuration.

Documented causes: Configuration or the control.

What you can do: Nothing, but the timing is the clue: this normally appears after a control has been replaced and not reconfigured.

43 Processor fault

What triggers it: A RAM error during the controller self-test.

Documented causes: Faulty program.

What you can do: Nothing. As with code 35, the remedy is a new control.

When there is no code at all

Three situations produce no number, and the absence is itself information.

Status light dead, no response at all
Not a fault code, because nothing has enough power to report one. Low or no battery voltage, a poor battery connection, or a failed battery. Try the start switch at the generator and at the in-home panel; if neither responds, clean and tighten both battery cable connections.
Cranks but will not start, and no code appears
The engine is turning and the control has not yet given up on it. Confirm the fuel supply is on. If it cranks through to code 4, stop there.
Starting battery keeps running down
Marginal connections, a failing battery, the charging system, or excessive cranking. Worth acting on before it becomes a no-start, because that is the same failure one step later.

The first of those is the most common call we get, and it is almost always the battery rather than the generator — which is a subject of its own, because a standby battery fails in a way that gives no warning.

What we have not put on this page, and why

The Cummins service manual gives a diagnosis and repair procedure for every code above. Those procedures are not reproduced here. They are written for trained service personnel working inside a machine with mains voltage present on one side and generator voltage on the other, and the manual says so at the top of the section.

The code and its meaning are genuinely useful to an owner: they turn "it is not working" into a specific question, and they let you check the few things that are safe to check. The continuity measurements are a different matter, and a page that published them would be doing you no favors.

What a code does not tell you is how urgent it is. That judgment is the reason to have a dealer rather than a manual — and who covers the repair depends on the part, the age and the fault, which is worth knowing before the conversation rather than during it.

Questions

How do I read the fault code on a Cummins generator?

The status indicator light on the control switch inside the enclosure blinks it. A repeating set of one, two or four blinks is a first-level fault and means it directly: one is high engine temperature, two is loss of oil pressure, four is cranking time exceeded. Three blinks means a service fault, and pressing Stop once makes the controller blink the two-digit code — tens first, a brief pause, then units. Code 36 blinks three, pause, six.

The light stopped blinking. Did the fault clear?

No. The code stops blinking five minutes after the shutdown, whether or not anything was fixed. Press Stop three times within three seconds to bring it back. Worth knowing the other way round too: the last fault logged keeps blinking even after the cause has been corrected, so a blinking code is not proof the problem is still present.

Why is there no code 33 or code 44?

Because they would be ambiguous. A first-level fault of three or four blinks could be misread as a two-digit 33 or 44, so Cummins never assigned those two numbers to anything. It is a small piece of design that tells you the blink codes were meant to be read by people rather than machines.

Which fault codes can I do something about myself?

Five of them have a safe first check. Code 2 is oil level, and an overfill causes it as readily as a low level. Code 32 is usually battery terminals, which are visible and free to fix. Code 76 is usually blocked cooling airflow. Code 78 tells you to open a closed fuel valve, which is the manufacturer's own first instruction. Code 79 asks you to confirm the main breaker on the generator is on. Past those, the honest answer is a service call.

The generator does nothing at all and there is no light. What is that?

Not a fault code, because nothing has enough power to report one. That is low or no battery voltage, a bad connection, or a dead battery. Try the start switch at the generator and at the in-home panel — if neither responds, clean and tighten both battery cable connections before assuming the worst.

Should I keep trying to start it?

No, and this is the one piece of advice on the page that saves real money. Repeated cranking on a machine that will not start is how a healthy starter and a healthy battery get destroyed in the same night, and it turns a service call into a parts order. Once you have code 4, stop.
