Whole-house generator repair in McKinney, Grapevine, Mansfield and Midlothian

We repair and service standby generators in McKinney, Grapevine, Mansfield and Midlothian with our own crews. On a Cummins, warranty work has to be done by an authorized Cummins service provider, which we are. Call (214) 957-4307, Monday–Friday 7am–6pm, Saturday 8am–12pm.

Is it a warranty repair?

That decides who pays for what, so it comes first. The Cummins terms, counted from the date the unit was first started up:

Unit Years 1 and 2 Years 3 to 5
Air-cooled RS13A, RS17A, RS20A, RS20AC Parts, labor and travel Parts only, up to 2,000 hours
Liquid-cooled RS25 to RS150 2 year base warranty Extended warranty only
RA and RSS transfer switches Parts, labor and travel Extended warranty only

Cummins asks the owner to notify a Cummins dealer within 30 days of discovering a failure, and excludes, among other things, lack of maintenance, late servicing and unauthorized repair. The full terms and the extended options are on warranty and service. As the dealer, we authorize Cummins warranty work ourselves and manage the claim.

Before you call

  • Model and serial number, from the nameplate on the unit.
  • The start-up date. The warranty clock runs from it, and Cummins asks for evidence of it.
  • The fault code, if the controller is showing one. How to read it, and which ones you can safely check yourself.
  • The service record. It is what a warranty claim is checked against.

If it will not crank, the battery is the first thing to check: generator battery maintenance.

The Cummins service intervals

From the Cummins operator manual for the air-cooled RS13A to RS20AC (A053X174), which says to “perform all service at the time period indicated, or after the number of operating hours indicated, whichever comes first”:

Item Interval
Check engine oil levelMonthly without outages; daily during an outage
Change engine oil and oil filterFirst 25 and 100 hours, then every 200 hours or 2 years
Adjust valve clearanceFirst 25 and 100 hours, then every 200 hours, by an authorized Cummins technician
Replace engine air filterEvery 200 hours or 2 years; more often in dusty conditions
Clean and check starting batteryEvery 200 hours
Complete system testEvery 200 hours or 2 years, by an authorized Cummins technician

On the liquid-cooled RS25 to RS40, the Cummins manual (A045R242) sets oil and filters after the first 50 hours and then every 200 hours or 12 months, and the air cleaner at 100 hours. A multi-day outage can bring a 200-hour interval forward by months, which is why the oil check goes to daily while the power is out. The parts for an air-cooled visit are in the Cummins preventative maintenance kit, part A054H068 (accessories and parts), and what a visit covers is on maintenance and service plans.

Other brands

We do electrical work and general maintenance on other brands of standby generator, after inspecting the installation first. Warranty work on another manufacturer goes through that manufacturer’s dealer network, so for a unit still under its warranty, call its dealer.

City by city

A repair that turns into a replacement is a new installation, with a permit. What each city publishes, and who supplies the power and the gas:

McKinney

Electricity: Oncor, CoServ Electric or Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative, depending on the address. Gas: Atmos Energy. Permits: McKinney has a dedicated Residential Standby Generator permit, filed through the CSS portal, separate from its stand-alone electrical and plumbing permits. Published fee: $80.

Grapevine

Electricity: Oncor across most of the city, with Tri-County Electric Cooperative in northwest Grapevine. Gas: Atmos Energy. Permits: One combined mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fuel gas application, with a fee charged per trade.

Mansfield

Electricity: Oncor or United Cooperative Services, depending on the address. Gas: Atmos Energy. Permits: Stand-alone electrical and plumbing-gas permits. The city will not issue the electric or gas service release until it has passed the inspection, so the inspection gates your connection.

Midlothian

Electricity: HILCO Electric Cooperative serves the city per its own services page, with Oncor serving part of it — check your bill. Gas: Atmos Energy. Permits: Midlothian has no generator line in its Master Fee Schedule. Its electrical permit minimum fee is $50, and a permit that is required but not listed on the schedule is priced on the total valuation of the work.

Fees side by side are in generator permit fees by DFW city.

Questions

Who can repair my Cummins generator under warranty?

An authorized Cummins service provider. The Cummins operator manual says warranty work "MUST be completed by your authorized Cummins Power Generation service provider." UTS ElectricPros is an authorized Cummins dealer, so we authorize the warranty work ourselves, open the claim and manage it.

Is the repair covered if my generator is three years old?

On a Cummins air-cooled unit, the part usually is and the visit is not. The 5 year / 2,000 hour warranty covers parts, labor and travel in years 1 and 2, then parts only in years 3 to 5, counted from the date of initial start-up. An extended warranty bought with the unit can cover labor and travel for longer. The liquid-cooled range has a 2 year base warranty.

Do you repair Generac, Kohler and other brands?

We do electrical work and general maintenance on other brands, after inspecting the installation first. Warranty work on another manufacturer has to go through that manufacturer's dealer network.

How often does a Cummins home standby generator need service?

The Cummins operator manual for the air-cooled RS13A to RS20AC sets an oil and filter change at the first 25 and first 100 hours, then every 200 hours or every 2 years, whichever comes first, along with the air filter, a battery clean-and-check and a complete system test. Check the oil monthly when there are no outages and daily during one. The liquid-cooled manual sets oil and filters after the first 50 hours, then every 200 hours or 12 months.

What should I have ready when I call?

The model and serial number from the nameplate, the date the unit was started up, the fault code if the controller is showing one, and the service record. Those settle whether it is a warranty matter before anyone drives out.
