Cummins Onan QD series

Onan 10HDKCA11506

10,000-watt RV genset, diesel, 120/240V. The generator most coaches are built around.

Cummins Onan 10HDKCA11506 10kW Diesel RV generator
10,000W Diesel 120/240V · 83.3/41.7A 45A 2-Pole

Onan is the genset the RV industry standardized on, which has a practical consequence beyond brand preference: parts, filters and service documentation are available everywhere, and any competent RV shop in the country has worked on one. That is worth real money the first time something fails three states from home.

At 10,000 watts this unit will run two rooftop air conditioners plus the rest of the coach. Air conditioning is almost always the deciding load in a coach, and the surge at startup - not the steady draw - is what sets the requirement.

As a QD-series diesel set it draws from the coach fuel tank, so there is no separate fuel to manage. Note that these ship without a battery charger.

Questions about the 10HDKCA11506

How much is the Onan 10HDKCA11506?

$14,773.21 for the genset itself. Installation into a coach is separate and depends entirely on the chassis - whether there is an existing generator bay, how the fuel pickup is arranged, and what the exhaust routing looks like.

Will the 10HDKCA11506 run my RV air conditioning?

At 10,000 watts it will run two rooftop air conditioners plus the rest of the coach. Rooftop air conditioners draw a large surge on startup, so the practical limit is usually the starting load rather than the running load. A soft-start module on the AC changes that math considerably and is often cheaper than moving up a generator size.

Why a diesel RV generator?

Diesel gensets pull from the coach's existing fuel tank, so there is no second fuel to manage and no propane to run out of at a boondocking site. They are the standard on diesel pushers for exactly that reason. They also tend to last longer under heavy hours than a gasoline set.

Is the 10HDKCA11506 CARB compliant?

No. This model is not CARB compliant and cannot be sold new into California or CARB-aligned states. For Texas use that is not a restriction, but it is worth knowing if you may resell the coach across state lines.

What it is for

Power on the coach, away from shore power

Boondocking, a campsite with no hookup, or a rally where the power pedestal is already full. Without onboard generation the air conditioning, the microwave and the converter all stop when you leave the plug behind.

Why it becomes urgent

Summer travel in Texas means the coach air conditioner is the load that decides whether the trip is comfortable.

Who buys it

Motorhome and coach owners running Onan QG and QD gensets.
