Cold-weather generator operation

A hard freeze is the event most people in this market buy a generator for. It is also the condition that finds every weakness in the installation at once.

The machine is rated for far worse than Texas gets

So the generator itself is not the fragile part. DFW has never come close to the bottom of that range, and the February 2021 freeze — the reference event in this market — bottomed out well inside it. What fails in a freeze is almost never the engine's temperature rating. It is three things around it.

1. The battery

A lead-acid battery delivers less cranking current as it gets colder, and a standby generator asks for all of it at once. A battery that has been quietly declining through a Texas summer will often start the unit fine at 70°F during its weekly exercise and then fail to turn the engine over at 15°F, which is the first time anybody finds out.

2. Propane vaporization

If you are on natural gas, skip this. Pipeline gas arrives at pressure regardless of the weather, and there is no cold-weather fuel failure mode.

Propane is different, because an LP tank has to do work a gas meter does not. The fuel is stored as liquid and has to boil into vapor before the engine can burn it. That boiling happens at the wetted surface inside the tank, and two things reduce it at exactly the wrong moment: cold slows the rate, and a tank low on liquid has less wetted surface to boil from. A tank that has run a generator for two days in a freeze is both colder and emptier than when it started.

The practical answers are a tank sized with margin rather than to the minimum, and filling it before a freeze rather than after one starts. If you have not chosen a fuel yet, this is one of the real differences between them: natural gas, propane or diesel.

3. The cold weather package

For installations that go below 0°F. Not needed on the AE and ACE models, which already include it. The kit is Cummins part A054B984, and it can be fitted at installation or retrofitted later.

The E-suffix models already include it, which makes the decision a straight price comparison rather than a specification question:

What to do before a freeze is forecast

  • Check the battery holds charge. Cold is when a marginal one finally fails, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to put right.
  • Fill the propane tank, do not top it up. More liquid means more wetted surface and more vaporization, as well as more runtime.
  • Run it under load once. A crank-only exercise proves the starter. It does not prove the machine will carry the house.
  • Clear the intake and exhaust. Drifted snow and ice against the enclosure is a real failure mode and a two-minute fix.

The first three are what a service visit covers anyway, which is the argument for having one booked before winter rather than after: maintenance and service plans. If the unit has remote monitoring fitted, a failed exercise reaches us before it reaches you.

The honest version

A correctly specified, maintained standby generator on natural gas will run through anything North Texas produces. Nearly every freeze failure we are called to is one of three things: a battery nobody checked, a propane tank that was too small or too empty, or a unit that had not been exercised under load in a year. None of those is the weather's fault, and all three are cheaper to prevent than to discover.

Will a standby generator work in a Texas ice storm?

That is the event it exists for, and yes — these units are rated -40°F to 122°F (-40°C to 50°C). What needs attention is not the generator's rating but three things around it: the battery, which loses cranking power as it gets colder; the fuel, if you are on propane rather than natural gas; and whether a cold weather kit is fitted. Get those right and a freeze is exactly the condition the machine was bought for.

Do I need a cold weather kit in Dallas-Fort Worth?

It is recommended below about 0°F. DFW does not get there most winters, but it has — and the winters when it does are precisely the winters the generator has to run for days rather than hours. The E-suffix models (RS13AE, RS17AE, RS20ACE, RS20AE) already include the package. On the models without it, the kit is Cummins part A054B984 and it can be fitted at installation or later.

Why do propane generators struggle in a freeze and natural gas ones do not?

Because a propane tank has to do work that a gas meter does not. LP arrives as liquid and has to boil into vapor before the engine can burn it, and that boiling happens at the wetted surface inside the tank. Cold slows it, and a tank that is low on liquid has less wetted surface to boil from, so the two problems compound exactly when you need the machine most. Natural gas has no equivalent failure — it arrives by pipeline already at pressure, whatever the weather is doing.

What should I do before a freeze is forecast?

Three things, none of which take long. Check the battery is holding charge, because cold is when a marginal battery finally fails to crank. If you are on propane, get the tank filled rather than topped up — a fuller tank both lasts longer and vaporizes better. And run the generator once under load so you find out now rather than at 2am.

Does cold change how much fuel the generator uses?

The generator itself burns what its load demands, and that does go up in a freeze because the house is working harder. The more important difference is that in an ice storm the outage lasts days rather than hours, so consumption compounds. That is a runtime and fuel-supply question rather than a cold-tolerance one, and it is the strongest practical argument for natural gas in this market.
